Can Somebody Enlighten Me As To What These Two Thi

Whilst fitting a new centre console by the gear stick I had to remove the ashtray. Beneath it was a blub and a wiring loom with an adaptor on it, but NOT connected to anything. What is this?

 

Under the front passenger seat there is an electrical black box about the size of two cassette cases - what is this?

 

Any help to satisy my curiouslity would be appreciated :rolleyes:

 

FYI - it's a 96 Galaxy LX.

Bulb could be for either cigar lighter or automatic gearbox selector illumination.

 

Box under seat is for central locking etc.

Yes, looks like a 10 pin connector. I take it I don't have a use for it then?

The bulb is for illuminating the inside of the ashtray you will notice there is a small clear plastic panel on the ashtray which the light shines through.

Aha, my front ashtray doesn't illuminate; this could mean that I will be taking the console apart this week-end to look for a blown bulb.

On my 1999 Galaxy, that I used to have, the mechanics used this plug/port under the ashtray to reprogramme a new key to replace the one stolen along with my missus handbag last March.

 

Let this be a lesson to you all, that simple spare key you have with your Galaxy, that used to cost a fiver when you had a Hillman Imp to get copied now costs a whopping

When you replaced the bulb,was it just the bulb you replaced?,which would seem a fiddly job,or does the new bulb come in its housing?,which would seem a trip to fords to get ripped off. :angry:

IIRC its an all in one unit, bulb and holder, it's a bit like the one on the cigar lighter socket, from Ford's it's available as an one peice unit but from VW the bulb is available seperately!
